San Jose's LGBTQ+ History and Activities

Silicon Valley Pride is this weekend at Plaza de Cesar Chavez! Silicon Valley Pride has called San Jose home for 44 years and is the largest pride organization in Northern California outside of San Francisco. SV Pride will kick off with a Transgender and Friends Rally followed by a ‘70s Disco themed Night Festival to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots.

Silicon Valley Pride isn’t just in the summer – you can enjoy SV Pride sponsored events year-round with Drag Brunch at SoFA Market and kid-friendly Drag Queen “Over the Rainbow” Storytime at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library.

The Alameda is the historic LGBTQ+ District in San Jose and home of the Billy DeFrank LGBTQ+ Community Center. Named after the stage name of William Price, a gay rights activist, African-American and member of the local drag community, the Billy DeFrank Center has served the LGBTQ+ community since 1981 and offers resources as well as activities and events. The LGBTQ Youth Space in Downtown San Jose’s SoFA District also provides resources and hosts events for the younger community.

One local LGBTQ-owned business is Cider Junction in Willow Glen, where you can show your pride with a rainbow cider flight - $1 from each flight goes to the Billy DeFrank Center. Splash, Mac’s Club and Renegades are San Jose’s popular LGBTQ+ clubs often featuring drag shows, theme nights and DJ events.
