SynBioBeta Returns to San Jose: CEO John Cumbers Previews What’s Ahead for Synthetic Biology
SynBioBeta Returns to San Jose
The Global Synthetic Biology Conference, presented by SynBioBeta, is returning to the San Jose McEnery Convention Center, May 5-8, 2025. The conference brings together innovators, thought leaders, entrepreneurs and investors from around the world to explore the opportunities in synthetic biology across multiple industries.
In this Q&A, the Visit San Jose team catches up with SynBioBeta CEO, John Cumbers, to get a sneak peak at what’s in store for this year’s conference and why you don’t want to miss it.
Q: What makes this year’s conference stand out from previous years? Is there anything you’re most excited about?
A: What excites me most is how AI, synthetic biology, and longevity are coming together in a way that truly defines this year’s SynBioBeta. We’re no longer imagining the future — we’re watching it unfold. From AI-designed proteins and next-generation vaccines to biomanufacturing platforms capable of creating molecules that have never existed in nature, the pace of innovation is accelerating. The tools are becoming smarter, faster, and more integrated than ever before. In longevity, we’re seeing real breakthroughs from cellular rejuvenation to age-related disease prevention. Researchers and startups are exploring how we not only live longer, but live better.
Q: What makes this year’s conference stand out from previous years? Is there anything you’re most excited about?
A: My biggest advice is to be open to the incredible community we’ve built at SynBioBeta. Take in the energy that the #nerdherd brings. This is your chance to connect not only with some of the brightest minds in synthetic biology, AI, and beyond, but also with the investors and startups shaping what’s next. Talk to someone new, sit in on a session outside your usual field, and don’t be afraid to ask bold questions. If you haven’t already, be sure to download our conference app to keep track of speakers and sessions, and share your experience with us on social media using #SynBioBeta.
Q: At this moment, what is the biggest opportunity in synthetic biology?
A: Right now, the most exciting opportunity in synthetic biology is in human health — particularly in aging and longevity. This year, we have speakers like Peter Diamandis and Bryan Johnson leading the conversation, and we’re joined by major pharmaceutical companies including Sanofi, Johnson & Johnson, Amgen, Eli Lilly and more. We’re seeing real momentum in how synthetic biology and AI are being used to tackle major healthcare challenges — from scaling cell therapy manufacturing to designing better antibodies. How do we make cell therapies more accessible? How do we engineer antibodies faster and more efficiently using AI? And ultimately, how can we live longer, healthier lives?
Q: How do you see the synthetic biology industry evolving in the next decade and how does this conference play a role in that?
A: Over the next decade, we anticipate biomanufacturing to be a significantly larger part of the U.S. bioeconomy. McKinsey has projected that more than 60% of global inputs could be made using biological inputs, but right now we're likely sitting at just 5-10%. That gap represents a massive opportunity not just for innovation, but for impact. With synthetic biology, we have the tools to localize manufacturing, decarbonise our petrochemical economy and create climate-negative materials and products that could truly redefine what sustainability looks like at scale. SynBioBeta plays a key role in this transformation — bringing together startups, investors, industry leaders, and policymakers who are all committed to building a better world with biology.
Q: Why did you choose the San Jose McEnery Convention Center as homebase for the conference?
A: We chose the San Jose Convention Center because it puts us right in the heart of Silicon Valley where innovation thrives. The Convention Center gives us the space to grow, especially our expo floor, and having two hotels directly connected makes it incredibly convenient for the attendees. We also love Mayor Matt Mahan’s commitment to revitalizing downtown San Jose, making the city cleaner, safer, and more vibrant. All of this aligns perfectly with the future-forward energy we want SynBioBeta to represent.
Q: What are your top San Jose recommendations for attendees who are in town for the conference?
A: I always recommend The Tech Interactive. I love bringing my kids to explore the exhibits, especially the BioTinkering Lab. It’s a great stop for anyone curious about hands-on science and innovation. For food, I’m a big fan of Eataly. You really can’t go wrong with anything. And of course, San Jose has a lot of great cafes and local spots worth checking out.
